Microsoft Gaming and Xbox executive Phil Spencer made humorous remarks about the PlayStation controller during the Tokyo Game Show 2024. According to Spencer, the placement of the “X” button on the DualSense controller is incorrectly positioned.
Phil Spencer Critiques PlayStation Controller at Tokyo Game Show 2024
Spencer expressed his discontent after testing the DualSense, stating, “The X button is in the wrong place. It should be here,” while pointing to the position of the X button on the Xbox controller. For those unfamiliar, the “X” button on the Xbox and PlayStation controllers is positioned diagonally in different locations.
Spencer’s playful comment highlights the ongoing console rivalry while also drawing attention to the design differences in controller layouts among major brands like PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch.
While Xbox and many other systems refer to this button as “X,” Sony names it “Cross” due to its visual shape. Because of the differing names, each company positions this button differently.
On the DualSense, the cross/X button is located at the bottom, while on Xbox controllers, it is on the left. In Nintendo Switch Joy-Con and Pro Controllers, the X/A button is placed at the top. Spencer’s joke brings attention to this potentially frustrating issue for gamers.
Meanwhile, Microsoft has been making determined strides towards releasing a portable gaming console. However, this device will not be solely focused on cloud gaming like the Sony PlayStation Portal.
